Coffees 4 A Cause
Enjoy Artisan Coffee with a Purpose
Coffees 4 A Cause is dedicated to roasting exceptional small-batch, artisan coffee. Sourcing great beans from high-altitude coffee growers in the best coffee-growing regions around the world.
We start the impact journey by investing in positive projects in the coffee-growing communities, like health-care, education, improving farming methods and micro-loans. Beyond that we plough profits into actively supporting other communities and meaningful causes, like children's literacy, supporting orphaned children and disaster relief efforts.
Enjoy your coffee knowing that every sip helps create a better world.

How the story started....
Founder - Hilton Edwards
Artisan Coffee Roaster & Chief Impact Officer
Just an average bloke, trying to make an above-average impact in the world.
I've spent more than 20 years making a difference in the charity sector, helping communities in over 50 countries with many and varied initiatives. Things like setting up an AIDS orphanage in The Valley of 1000 Hills in Africa, to facilitating literacy training to change the course of kids lives in Indonesian slums. Each life and each story have touched my heart and left an indelible drive and passion that made me realise there is SO much MORE to do. Recently I've felt led to "keep doing good" by investing my time and love for coffee into a business that not only roasts and delivers GREAT coffee, but makes an even GREATER impact in the process. From investing in healthcare, education, improved farming methods and micro loans amongst the growers of the coffee we roast, to continuing to reach out with tangible help in the form of literacy training, foster care and disaster relief efforts. This is the passion behind Coffees 4 a Cause!

Roasting with Purpose - some of the impact stories...
- From feeding kids in slums and on rubbish dumps; to helping establish a children's home for orphans of parents lost to AIDS; to literacy classes in places where schooling is out of reach; to helping rebuild classrooms after earthquakes....these are examples of some of the projects that will benefit through Coffee 4 A Cause ploughing back into communities
Partnered with The Library Project Vanuatu - increasing Literacy by putting libraries into schools in Vanuatu.libraryproject.com.au
Handing out food packs at a slum in Indonesia. These kids are enrolled in English Literacy classes which will allow them to escape the poverty of the slum
Feeding kids from a slum on a rubbish dump in Mexico. Learning takes place with better attention when stomachs are full
Sithembakuye Children's Home (kids whose parents have passed away due to AIDS) in Valley of 1000 Hills, South Africa
Literacy class at an orphanage (location withheld to protect identities of children)
What we look for when sourcing our coffee...
Whilst there are more than 12 million coffee farms worldwide, we look for a number of criteria when sourcing our coffee:
- We generally look for the smaller growers (with farms of less than 5 hectares), who have a heart and passion for growing quality coffee. Partnering with them yields green coffee beans that are grown in smaller batches (not mass-produced) and also fosters economic stability for communities, promotes sustainable and biodiverse farming, and helps preserve the diversity of coffee varieties.
-
- We also prefer to source coffee from high altitude plantations, elevation is one of the most important flavour factors in coffee. High altitude coffee beans have better, more complex flavours. The cooler temperatures of the high altitudes allow the coffee trees to grow slowly. This allows them to mature slower and develop complex flavours. Another advantage of high altitudes is being able to source Strictly Hard Beans (SHB), which are grown above 1,200 metres, allowing the coffee cherries to mature slower, leading to denser, sweeter beans that are packed with more nutrients and result in a more complex, higher-quality flavour. The increased density means the beans retain more sugars and other organic compounds, which develops into a more complex, aromatic, and acidic taste profile when roasted. With the combination of density and flavour complexity, this makes SHB coffee one of the most desirable coffees available.
-
- We want to be in the coffee business for the long haul, so sourcing coffee from countries that use and work pro-actively towards better sustainability are a natural choice. Countries like Costa Rica have made great strides in successfully reversing deforestation and are also using renewable energy, with more than 98% of their electricity coming from renewable energy sources.

How we roast our coffee...
For us, roasting coffee is a passion, an art-form, and an expression of who we are and what we stand for, but what does that mean in practical terms:
We roast small batches, which allow us to monitor temperature and time closely, coaxing out the specific flavour notes and aromas inherent to a particular bean. This means that you can expect a richer, more nuanced flavour profile with more distinct tasting notes in every sip.
We roast to order, meaning the coffee is roasted specifically for your purchase rather than sitting "in stock" for weeks or months. Coffee is at its flavour peak shortly after roasting. Small-batch roasting ensures you receive beans within that ideal flavour window, locking in bold aromas, a balanced acid profile and complexity. Slower roasting helps preserve beneficial compounds and antioxidants that can be lost during high-heat, high-volume roasting. And it is easier to maintain consistency and quality control with smaller batches, ensuring that all beans receive an even roast.
We also drink the coffee we roast, yes, we are confirmed Coffee Addicts Lovers (both actually). We use the excuse that we need "constant sampling", but in reality we really just love great coffee.

Love these beans! As something of a 'coffee snob' I was hesitant to try something new, but I'm glad I did! They brewed and tasted so smooth. Will definitely be getting them again! |
